Thessaloniki Quilt Guild

2:31 PM

As you already know, we moved to my hometown some months ago because we got tired of living in a small village apart from everything and everyone. Being closer to our friends and family helps a lot in many ways. But the main reason was to be again in a big city, meet new people that share the same interests with us and generally socialize more! That was something that really bothered us in a village!

As my main interest these past few years is quilting I "entered" one of the biggest quilting groups in Greece.

Leader, teacher, inspiration is a young at heart American lady that is really difficult to describe! She is literally like a 25 year old girl that wants to "consume" the world, that wants to change the world and make it a better place for everyone to live in. Her main goal is to spread the "word" of quilting all over Greece, and believe me it is a very long-term plan! The greatest thing is that she recently opened the first Quilt Shop in Greece the Quilt Bar, and finally we have a supplier for all quilty things. Thank you Kristine for being who you are!

So what about the Thessaloniki Quilt Guild? Well, Kristine started teaching quiting in her home about 7 years ago, and she started making a group of people who wanted to learn something different. She teaches hand quilting and hand piecing (no sewing machine necessary-can you believe it?) and many of her first students are now also teach quilting in various groups.

Every first Tuesday of the month most of her current and previous students gather in a space that has been given by YMCA and we make a quilt with a different block technique every month. Then the completed quilted is donated to YMCA. I have met some amazing people during these sessions, and moreover some of the more advanced students-quilters we meet every week at Kristine's house to make more quilts for philanthropic purposes! I cannot tell how excited I am to have met people that not only love quilting but they really want to promote it to Greece.

Still I have to tell you more about that group because I have many more pictures of the projects that we have been working on. Stay "tuned" for my next post!

  3. We, Greek quilters, love Kristine! It is amazing what she has accomplished in such a short time. Not only in Thessaloniki. The first quilt show went also to Athens and Sparti. She is an inspiration for all of us!. And she is a great caring person, as is her husband Thomas who supports her, as well as all the quilter friends!
